The Child in the Community: Nursing Makes a Difference

Free play like playing pretend or just playing outside is being done less as children are getting involved with sports at a younger age. Play time is not only limited by sports but also the limited access to free and open playgrounds and physical fitness in school. Playing or doing sports is not only fun for the child but also reduces chances of illnesses like cardiovascular disease. The earlier the child starts to exercise the better chance of having a healthy life. People who are less educated or come from a poorer background are more likely to have unhealthier lives. Groups like DSN and MPH along with Congress have been trying to make awareness of this. Congress has tried to increase the support for public education and giving schools a chance to increase awareness. Doing this it could lower the chances of disease. As parents and concerned groups, it is their right to be scared and want to raise awareness for this cause. Most coaches that are hired are not trained in child development but are trained in sports activities. Nurses on the other hand know this concept and are good candidates for spreading awareness. So with their help along with help of other groups and parents creating awareness this problem could be fixed.

  1. I totally agree that children should be educated and begin to get involved in physical activity at young ages! I also agree that the uneducated and/or poor should learn more about physical health and exercise, as they are at huge risk for health issues and/or diseases. I am very happy to hear that Congress is getting involved in this issue, I did not know that!

  2. I find this article very interesting due to the fact that it is true because kids wanna do sports or play outside more, rather than playing a board game or something of the source. In my job all the kids want all the time is a ball or to go outside despite of the weather. I feel like they need this though because at the end of the day all the kids need to give up their energy that they have stored up during the day.

  3. I totally agree with this article. Kids do need exercise in order to stay healthy. Also while at play, children use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. Its important for children not only to engage but interact with the world around them.

    1. I agree with you Shania & Katie. Exercise for developing children is important for the growth of their body, along with the development of their brain. Physical activity between groups or individual activity allows the child to build strength and confidence in what they do. Nursing a child on physical activity is completely beneficial and I don't see how there could be a downside to it. Nice job!
