This article talks about how socio-dramatic play can be very beneficial to children, but also mentions the many risks that come with socio-dramatic play. One of these risks is that there is a danger of an intellectualistic approach. This means that children may become too open minded, and that it is possible for them to discover things that they may not have known ever existed. This can be dangerous to a child's mind, especially if they discover things that are not meant for their age level. Another risk is that sometimes there can be a cognitive mistake, where sometimes the child will forget many other things that are going on around them since they are filling up their minds with more information and distracting themselves from the real world with imaginative things. The third and final risk is that sometimes, the child can sometimes can develop new habits that can be harmful to their own well being, since they are using their imagination so often that it could become their new favorite thing to do, and they will never learn about the real world if they do not get out of the habit of using their imagination every so often. Even though socio-dramatic play can help the mind develop, it can be very harmful to a child at the exact same time. This is something that is unavoidable, but most of the time it is very beneficial, so that it is okay to use your imagination some of the time.

I totally agree with your view on socio-dramatic play. Children need a sense of reality just like they need a sense of imagination. When approaching the real world, along with adulthood, they need to understand that there's a reality before there is a fantasy. I also agree that children can become too ahead of themselves at a young age, if they are exposed to too much from exploring more than needed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your concept that children may be too open-minded when it comes to socio-dramatic play. Kid dramas that they tend to watch like "Wizards of Waverly Place" or "Teen Titans" can portray this idea to little kids that they are able to do the impossible like the actors in the show, because some can't distinguish the difference between reality and a fantasy. It can go both ways with socio-dramatic plays because in a positive way, it can show children different outcomes of different situations.
ReplyDeleteYour concepts are completely understandable and agreeable. While it is important for a child to have an imagination and explore that creativity, just like most things too much of that can be very harmful. My nephew for example has formed a bad habit of saying thank you instead of please because he is imagining the reward instead of learning the habit of having manners. This isn't a major deal but I can see where you are coming from in your conclusion that learning new habits can harmful. I also understand where you are coming from when you say a child can be too open-minded. My little brother loves reading but if he stumbles upon an article about guns or something that isn't pg and not appropriate for an 8 year he would be exposed to issues that a child should not be exposed to.
