The article "Children's Play," written by Paul McArdle, describes the negative and positive effects of various types of play for children throughout their lives. This article taught me the importance of parental guidance within a child's life, which was very interesting. If a parent's involvement is great and interactive in a child's life, they begin to build social skills, along with emotional skills. They can interact with others in a proper manner and handle their emotional issues with care and thought, rather than with violence and whims. I also found it fascinating that a child's fantasy play is essential to their soon adulthood, because those plays develop the way a child problem solves, thinks, and interacts. Also, a child's safe/ secret place is important to their developing brains due to the need of safety, comfort and dominance. I can relate to this because when I was younger I remember I had my "secret" spots in my house that were "only known by me," and every time I was upset, that's were I would go. The article then goes into a deeper topic that further proves the necessary attendance for parents in a child's life. McArdle writes how one of the leading deaths and injuries for children is regarding car accidents due to the lack of care, and presence while a child is playing outside. With the lack of attention, a child is not guided towards the right direction. Along with these harmful results, a child can build anger and resort to violent reactions to solve problems. McArdle describes the two outcomes in detailed responses; with this I found the article flowing with interesting facts that even if I go back to my childhood memories, I can prove them with my own experiences.

  1. I truly agree with what you wrote. It is true that parents involving in a child's life leads them in a good direction and keep them safe. While when parents aren't involved children aren't safe and are always mad about everything that happens around them. I love how you did a comparison to your childhood and can relate to the article.

  2. I find childrens way of play very interesting and cool because you can always sense where the child is at in skill level. just like you said you had your secret spot, you can tell how a child's mind is growing and you can also learn from them to know what they want or like. As far as for the parents needing to be there for their children more i believe this is true because its sad seeing children suffer from loss of attention and i believe they should have attention to the point where they can smile at you and later in life trust you more instead of just a parent but as more of a friend.

  3. I think the involvement of parents in a child's life is super important when it comes to development. I remember reading an article where a girl didn't have any interaction through her development and ended up not gaining social skills like other kids did. Parents are the most important people in a child's life during development.
